Background

It is easy to underestimate Bridge Carson. At first glance, Bridge appears irrelevant, absurd and somewhat comical. His inclination towards rambling in conversation frustrates nearly all of his teammates and allies at S.P.D., as does his tendency to speak in metaphors and tangents. However, beneath his friendly exterior, Bridge is a brilliant detective who uses his offbeat perspective to his own advantage. With his psychic powers, he is able to see multiple perspectives and events at once, which might explain his inability to communicate his thoughts to his teammates in a straightforward manner. It also doesn’t help that Bridge is the least forceful member of B-Squad. When his teammates become too frustrated to understand his perspective, Bridge lacks the confidence and ability to make them listen, and sometimes he will pursue his own leads by himself if he can't make the others understand (A-Bridged, Wired pt. II, Robotpalooza). He often stands on his head when he needs to think about tough problems, explaining to Boom in Dogged that gravity causes ideas to rush down to his head, making his brain soak them up better.

At the start of the season, Bridge is a rumpled, disorganized cadet. His appearance is usually unkempt (his hair is messy, his clothes fit poorly and he never tucks his shirt in, for example) and he is eager and easily excited, at times breaking protocol to comment on or ramble on a tangent in front of his Commanding Officer (Beginnings pt. I and II, Confronted, Walls, Dogged, A-Bridged). He also likes to volunteer for things (Walls, Stakeout, S.W.A.T. pt. I). While his other teammates have initial conflicts with each other (Syd with Z, Sky with Jack and even Syd and Sky), Bridge remains the most neutral member of B-Squad. He is the first one to welcome Z to the B-Squad in Beginnings and is quick to forgive Jack when the Red Ranger doubts Bridge’s abilities in A-Bridged. He appears to be good friends with Boom and he considers R.I.C. to be a “member of the S.P.D. family” (Dogged). As the series progresses, Bridge gains the respect of both Jack and Sky, the two least trusting members of B-Squad (A-Bridged, Samurai, Robotpalooza, Endings pt. II). He also gains confidence in himself and by series end appears more organized and controlled. When Sky Tate is promoted to Red Ranger in Endings pt. II, Bridge is promoted to second command as the Blue Ranger.

Not much is known concerning Bridge's early background. He was born in the year 2004 on a transcontinental flight, which resulted in Bridge being unsure of which day he should celebrate his birthday on, because as he put it, “I was actually born the day before I was born”. He appears to not know his own astrological sign, either, which might indicate that he was born on the cusp of two signs (Zapped, Wormhole). He comments to Z that it was “tough growing up different” in regards to his genetic powers but never elaborates on this topic. He is a master mechanic.

Operation Overdrive Era

An unknown amount of time after the series end, Supreme Commander Birdy retired, resulting in promotions for Doggie, Sky and Bridge. Bridge thus became the S.P.D. Red Ranger and B-Squad's leader. When the Operation Overdrive Rangers lost their powers, Bridge was one of five previous Rangers called upon by the Sentinel Knight to protect the jewels of the Corona Aurora, being brought back in time to the year 2007. He fought alongside Adam Park, Xander Bly, Tori Hanson and Kira Ford as the Operation Overdrive Rangers' temporary replacements, also using his civilian powers to help Adam locate Alpha 6 when they travelled to Angel Grove. He helped pilot the DriveMax Megazord, and in the final battle against Thrax, borrowed Mack's Drive Lance to fight with. Though a more mature and self-organized leader by this point, Bridge has retained his tendency to ramble and love for buttery toast (Once a Ranger pts. I and II).

Hobbies

In his free time Bridge enjoys tinkering with his computer and other electronic devices and has a subscription to the computer magazine, “Extreme Upgrade”. Bridge is also an advisor for C and D level cadets at the S.P.D. Academy. He is the editor of the Academy newspaper (Shadow pt. II). Bridge is shown reading comic books, playing lightball and standing on his head during off hours. He has a fondness for buttered toast (Dogged, Resurrection, Once a Ranger pt. II).

Abilities

Civilian Powers

All five of the core S.P.D. rangers possess unique genetic powers. The origin of their powers remained a mystery until the episode Sam pt. II, where Cruger revealed that their parents worked for S.P.D. in a secret project that involved prolonged exposure to “cellular enhancers”. This exposure resulted in mutations in their childrens' DNA. Bridge is a psychic, and has the power to view auras, or colorful energy fields. He can also see events that happened in the past, touch things to find out information about them (Sam pts. I and II) and even occasionally see future events, although this last ability was only shown once (Robotpalooza) and was limited to when Bridge was sleeping. In the episode Samurai, Bridge displayed the ability to read people's minds and this was treated as a new development in his powers. Bridge channels his abilities through his hands and he constantly wears leather gloves to prevent the accidental activation of his powers.

Ranger Powers

The Green Ranger has the following arsenal:

  • Delta Morpher - The morpher has four functions. It allows Bridge to morph into the Green Ranger, operates as a communication device, is used to judge criminals in “Judgment Mode” and to contain criminals in “Confinement Mode”.
  • Deltamax Striker - This weapon combines the baton and knuckle sidearms to form a more powerful weapon.
  • Delta Enforcer - A powerful rifle weapon used only in S.W.A.T. Mode. It has the power to contain guilty criminals when a Confinement Card is swiped and inserted.

The Green Ranger has one power-up:

  • S.W.A.T. Mode - Short for Special Weapons and Tactics. An upgrade all five core Rangers received after undergoing training under Sgt. Silverback to learn how to work together. S.W.A.T. Mode gives the Rangers extra armor and a weapon, the Delta Enforcer, as well as enhancing their helmets' tracking capabilities and their own physical strength.

The Green Ranger's Vehicles:

  • Green Patrol Bike - Bridge received this bike in Walls. It is fast and equipped with powerful lasers.
  • Green Delta Runner - Bridge's Delta Runner is a trailer truck. It can tow and carry heavy loads, and also holds the Megazord's gun (which it can fire independently) and most of the blade of the Judgment Sword. It becomes the right leg of the Delta Squad Megazord and right arm of the Deltamax Megazord.
  • Green S.W.A.T. Flyer - The Green S.W.A.T. Flyer is truck-like, heavily-armored, and equipped with lasers. It forms the legs of the S.W.A.T Megazord and most of the barrels of the S.W.A.T Flyer Cannon.

Known Relatives

Bridge has an unnamed mother who lives locally in a house with a garage (Impact). He also has an Uncle named Bernie, who once shoved mud clumps up his nose and got a severe infection (Confronted). Growing up, Bridge had a bulldog. Bridge thought his bulldog was often depressed because of a flea problem (Shadow pt. I). Interestingly, Bridge never mentions his dad, leading some fans to think that his father is either dead or that his parents are divorced. He has no other known relatives.

Affiliations

S.O.P.H.I.E.

As a B-Squad Power Ranger, Bridge acts as an advisor to lower level cadets. One of Bridge’s advisees was S.O.P.H.I.E. S.O.P.H.I.E. stands for Series One Processor Hyper-Intelligent Encryptor. She was a highly skilled D-level cadet that Bridge recommended for the position of “Computer Intern” in the Command Center of the Academy, saying she knew “a ton about computers […]maybe even more” than Bridge himself (Wired pt. I). However, because cyborgs are not allowed to join S.P.D., S.O.P.H.I.E. hid her identity from Bridge and the other Rangers. Her identity was revealed when she was almost kidnapped by a criminal named Valco. Valco intended to use S.O.P.H.I.E. to power a robot called Goridon. Valco’s plan eventually was thwarted by both S.O.P.H.I.E. and the Shadow Ranger. S.O.P.H.I.E. also helped Kat sequence the logarithms for the Phase Two process which enabled the S.P.D. base to form the Delta Command Megazord (Wired pt. II).

Bridge and S.O.P.H.I.E. have a student/mentor relationship. When S.O.P.H.I.E. worried about adjusting to life at SPD, Bridge offered advice and friendship. Bridge was also able to convince his fellow teammates to trust S.O.P.H.I.E. At the end of Wired pt. II, S.O.P.H.I.E. was transferred to the Theta Quadrant to overhaul computer systems.

Notes

  • Bridge's birthdate is between December 2003 and May 2004, since he was born after Conner McKnight had gotten his Battlizer, but before the Dino Thunder team had lost their powers. That would mean he was already 21 years old as of around Stakeout, and possibly 21 at the start of the season. His profile on the Jetix website and his original character description listed his age as 17; based on the canon evidence, this is obviously incorrect.
  • The original character descriptions mentioned that Bridge was supposed to be the only one on the team everyone liked, and that he was headstrong, rushing into battle without thinking. In addition, he was to have MacGyver-like abilities, i.e. the ability to fix anything with whatever comes to hand.
  • Information from the episode Idol allows a rough approximation of when Bridge joined S.P.D. to be made. Though it's not certain, he seems to know who Dru is, therefore he came to S.P.D. before Dru left, which was three years before the series began. This means he was possibly as young as 13-14 (if one follows Jetix's given age) or was 17-18 (if one follows the information on his age given in Wormhole) when he joined.
  • Bridge is second only to Tommy Oliver in the number of colors he has worn as a Ranger- Green, then Blue, then Red. He is also unique in being the only Green Ranger to become Blue, and the only Blue Ranger to be promoted to Red. Previous Rangers Rocky DeSantos and T.J. Johnson wore both Red and Blue, but in both cases were Red and became Blue instead of vice-versa.
  • There is only one time in the series that Bridge gives a specific color when describing an aura- in A-Bridged, he says that T-Top's aura is yellow-orange (or maybe more like orangey-yellow?), meaning that he is not evil.
  • Bridge's habit of standing on his head in order to think comes directly from his Dekaranger counterpart, Sen-chan, who would often do the same thing and spot or remember something that would let him solve problems. The gloves actually came from Z's counterpart, Jasmine, who was an ESPer (Psychic) and wore them to control her powers, as Bridge does, though Jasmine's powers were much more developed and well-defined than Bridge's (she could consistently read minds, for example).
  • Bridge's actor, Matt Austin, has a tattoo on his left wrist. The actor usually takes care to cover it up- for instance, throughout the series, Bridge consistently takes off his right glove when he uses his powers, but never his left (with the exception of Sam pt. I). In other instances, his shirt sleeves, the camera angle, a wristband, or another object will over it up. However, there are two known times it is visible- once in Beginnings pt. I, and once in Samurai.
  • In Once a Ranger pt. I, it's interesting to note that there's one brief instance where, due to actor error, Bridge can be seen with his gloves off, and a wedding band is visible on his left hand. (Note, of course, that Matt Austin is married, so this probably doesn't indicate Bridge's marital status.)
