Eric first appears as a member of the Silver Guardians, Bio-Lab's private security force which Mr. Collins hires out to protect the businesses of Silver Hills. We quickly learn that he knows Wes from prep school, but seems to consider him more of a rival than a friend. Soon afterwards Eric seizes the opportunity to take the Quantum morpher, which has been discovered in an archaeological dig, and becomes the Quantum Ranger. While he and the other Rangers always fight on the same side, Eric never really joins the team and in fact is often more of an obstacle than an ally.
Eric is not a nice person, at least in his early appearances. He is hostile, arrogant, and sometimes violent. However, he is definitely on the right side and never does anything unforgivable. As the series continues and he slowly shows some response to Wes's continued efforts to be friendly, his attitude improves considerably.
As Quantum Ranger, Eric's usual weapon is the Quantum Defender, which can be used in blaster mode and sword mode. His transportation is the TF Eagle, a compact personal flyer. He is the only Ranger to have his own zord, the Quantasaurus Rex or Q-Rex, and he has a power-up, the Mega Battle Armor, which comes with extra weaponry and the ability to fly.
Eric is also an accomplished martial artist, an ability he uses successfully to fight off cyclobots on more than one occasion.
No family is specifically mentioned for Eric, but he hints strongly at a troubled and impoverished childhood both by his generally angry and defensive attitude, and by telling Wes in End of Time pt. II: “I had nothing. I was dirt poor - and I have struggled for as long as I can remember to pull my life out of the gutter. No one helped me, not even for one minute.”
Eric seems attached to Mr. Collins by the latter part of the series, perhaps seeing his employer as a father figure. His attitude towards the other Rangers, and especially Wes, evolves slowly from outright hostility through grudging teamwork to respect and the beginnings of friendship.
In Reinforcements From the Future, Eric seems to be quite attracted to Taylor, the Yellow Wild Force Ranger. In both that episode and in Forever Red, he appears to have become good friends with Wes.
While 'officially' Eric is a teenager, this is never established on-screen. Considering he is employed full-time in the Silver Guardians and is in fact appointed to be their commander, he must be at least eighteen and quite likely older.
While Eric states that he grew up 'dirt poor', he is seen in flashbacks attending the same prep school as Wes. (And being shunned by at least one other student, presumably for not being in the same social class.) It seems safe to assume his claim that no one ever helped him is an exaggeration since someone, perhaps through a scholarship, must have financed his education in what appears to be an expensive private school.
Eric is the first Ranger to have serious conflicts with the other Rangers in his team without the influence of brainwashing, evil spells, or villainous deception.
Eric keeps his morpher and his powers, and teams up with Wild Force in Reinforcements From the Future and with a group of nine other Red Rangers (including Wes) in Forever Red.
