Background

Frax is an ambiguous character from the beginning - on the surface he is a loyal follower of Ransik and calls him 'Master', but it quickly becomes apparent that he resents not only Ransik but all mutants. Slowly his rebellious attitude grows - first only in mutterings, then as he begins to secretly release the most dangerous of the mutant criminals from the X-vault. Finally he releases Venomark, a mutant who once almost killed Ransik with his venomous bite, leaving him dependant on a steady supply of blue anti-venom serum. In one of the series' most dramatic scenes, Frax then destroys the mutant leader's supply of life-saving serum.

Dr. Fericks The truth is that Frax is more than a robot - he was once human. Some time prior to the year 3000, Dr. Louis Fericks, an accomplished medical doctor as well as (apparently) a mechanical and electrical engineer and robotics expert, found Ransik after Venomark had poisoned him and left him to die. The compassionate doctor, accompanied by two cyclobots, took Ransik to his laboratory and gave him the serum which temporarily cured him. Ransik rewarded him by stealing his serum and his cyclobots, and blowing up his laboratory. Gravely injured, Dr. Fericks managed to transfer his human brain and mind into the golden body of a robot - and became Frax.

Notes

Even after the end of the series, much of Frax's motivation remains unclear. Despite being originally human, he seems to hate both humans and mutants and does his best to destroy not only the Power Rangers but Silver Hills. Perhaps his ordeals and his transformation from human to robot have affected what remains of his mind. Or - it's possible that he blames humans for their undeniable mistreatment of mutants in the society of the future, a persecution that led to Ransik's rabid hatred, which led to the destruction of Dr. Fericks' human body.

Frax does many terrible things during the Time Force series, but in the end he remains basically a tragic figure, more a victim than a villian. Perhaps he finds peace at last after his death in End of Time pt. III.
